I had to create a 30 second advertisement based around an already existing product. Along with this we had to create three print based adverts to accompany the advert. I chose to create my advert around the product of Marmite. I chose Marmite because I wanted to make an ad that could have humour and I believed that if I played off the love it or hate it tradition, I could successfully make a funny ad.

To be able to understand what makes Marmite ads successful, I needed to do some research into past adverts. From my research I discovered that lots of other Marmite adverts used humour based off the idea that you either love it or you hate it and I wanted my advert to follow in the same vain so I took inspiration from these ads to make my own. I knew from the off that I wanted to incorporate my passion for puppetry into my advert as I thought it would be a unique way of making my advert because nobody else would do it that way. I also did some research into Muppet adverts from the 1950's and 60's. These adverts were where the Muppets really got their start in the States.   The most famous Muppet ads were for a company called Wilkins coffee that aired across america from 1957-1961, in these ads which were usually no more than 10 seconds each saw Wilkins, an advocate of the coffee have a conversation with Wontkins about whether or not he likes Wilkins coffee. Wontkins would reply no and chaos would ensue. Wilkins would then proceed to blow up,punch or hurt Wontkins in some way because he did not like the brand. I took inspiration from this as I thought this could play off nicely with the love it or hate it idea.  Doing this research enabled me to have a good understanding of both my product's advertising history as well as an understanding of past Muppet adverts. These were both beneficial to the process of making my ad as I now know what I needed to achieve to make my ad successful.  I will continue to do these in future projects as it gives me a great understanding of my product or film.

Before I could make my advert, i needed to understand my target audience so I decided that I needed to conduct a survey to find out what my demographic for my advert would be. I conducted an eight question questionnaire about their location, gender, household income, age and their favourite type of adverts to make sure i make my advert to appeal to the right audience.  I was pleased with what i discovered as the data I collected was accurate and reliable for me to use towards my advert. However i do wish i had gotten more responses on my questionnaire. I only got 15 responses and all of them were favours from my friends who were kind enough to do it for me so next time I want to get at least double the responses so i can get more data which can help me further understand my target audience in future projects. Next time I will try and reach out to a wider market of people to do my survey by publishing it on social media, this way I can reach out to a wider number of people. I can also conduct interviews and  focus groups to find out about peoples interests in adverts to bring in more responses

My idea was not the first idea i had, I had two idea that were very different to my final product. My first idea was an advert for the charity Kick it out and it was in response to the horrific events in the England Vs Bulgaria clash back in October, I could not have done this because i wanted to use archival footage from that game and previous games with similar incidents and we had to create the footage ourselves so that was possible. The other was a Nike Football ad which would have two people performing skills and shooting in the ad. The problem with the ad would have been it had to be one a specific product rather than a general brand.  These ideas would have been about and came from my love of football and as i could not do these i had to think about another idea. The idea i ran with, came about as i wanted to do a advert based around my passion of puppetry and i thought about how using visual effects like puppets could be used to create an interesting and funny ad. My idea did develop from my original idea however it did not change that drastically and I did not really think how things could really develop.  If i was to do something differently, I would think about doing a focus group or creating a questionnaire to ask my target audience  what they think of the idea and receive feedback. This way I can take that feedback from the target audience and use that to develop my idea further to suit the target demographic

The first thing i thought about when it came to planning was the characters i wanted to use and straight away I thought of Blu the Monkey and Ned. These are characters which i have owned for of years and i'm comfortable with so they were the two I picked. Next i wrote my script, I knew i wanted my script to follow a story line which played with the idea of loving or hating Marmite and ultimately ended in that classic Muppet way of something being destroyed, in this case it was the Marmite. I was happy with script I wrote, I thought it told the story I wanted, it was funny and i was satisfied with it. However as i would later find out when it came to the editing, it was too long for a thirty second advert so next time I will need to do a second draft to improve on what i had and to try and cut it down . I also produced a story board., Location reece, risk assessment  and treatment in order to then begin production. Doing this enabled me to be able to get a clear direction of where i wanted to take my piece, by doing things like a treatment and a storyboard gave me a clearer understanding of  what direction I wanted my ad to take. i will continue to produce these documents in future projects because it can give me a clear direction of where i want to take my piece.

I shot my advert in the studio at the college and it was a learning curve for me because it was the first time I had used and operated lighting, sound and cameras together as well as an external monitor which I had used  for the first time to help me to see my own performance with the puppet on my hand so i know I'm doing what I am supposed to be doing.  I was happy with the footage we shot however I felt we could improve certain things like the lighting, shot type and my own performance so I decided to re-shoot. And the second time around I was much happier with everything so when I do a shoot again I can learn from the mistakes I made this time around in order to correct my mistakes next time. Understanding this, in future projects I will plan to conduct a test shoot to allow me to identify the potential shortcomings before having to do my proper shoot. This way it gives me a chance to pick out what does not work and adapt it before I shoot properly

This project has given me a lot of skills that I can take forward and use in future projects and has given me a lot of understanding on how things work has also shown me that there are some areas that didn't always go well but I can learn from them

I have set myself three targets
1. Plan a test shoot- in order to eliminate mistakes before the actual shoot
2. Place survey on social media to attract more respondents
3.  Continue to do detailed research to understand my product or idea
