Production
I have done two test shoots, The first on Wednesday 6th November in the break room at creative studios. This test shoot was done to get a first look at the puppets would look like on camera. I wanted to do this as if the characters did not look natural on the camera, then i have had to of come up with an alternative idea or just use human actors. However this was successful so there wasn't any sound recorded as i didn't have a mic and the break room was too noisy. So i would have to do another test shoot to test the sound, as well as how I am going to position the camera because the puppets are going to be at a table so i want to know how low i need the camera to position so its at eye level with the puppets.
I did my next test shoot with my characters on Monday 11th November, I tested the sound with a mic that was attached to an extension lead and placed next to me under the table, but because of the carpet the sound felt muffled so someone had to hold the mic up up to my mouth in order for it to become much clearer so we decided we would either use a radio mic that i would wear during the shoot or the mic that would be above me that resides in the studio. I also decided that i would need to use an external monitor so i could see my performance. I wanted to be able to see my performance so i can see where my character is looking in the right places, if he is in the right position or if my head or arm is in shot. Using a monitor would give me much more confidence in my performance. As well as giving more confidence, it will also give me more practise and experience because this would be my first time using a monitor and in professional puppetry the performers all use monitors so it would be a good experience for me to learn how learn how to use a monitor. We also found that we needed to have the camera fairly low when.
On Monday 11th, I filmed my advert in the springboard studio. we set up the cameras, monitors and lights ahead of our shoot and I decided against using a radio mic and decided to use an overhead microphone because I thought it would be the most comfortable for my performance and i also thought the quality of sound might be better with the overhead mic.
At first glance i was very happy with my footage, I thought my shot type and lighting was solid and my own personal performance was good. However i decided however much i liked my performance and the footage that it could be so much better.
For one i thought the lighting was slightly too dark. In the behind the scenes images we took, i thought the lighting wad good, however it looked slightly too dark. That is because I only used a fill and a key light. I had debated whether i used two or three point lighting and i decided to go for two. That was the wrong choice. My camera angle was pointed slightly too high and I wanted to have it at eye level. /And i also decided my own personal performance could be improved, so I decided to Re-Shoot. And even though I wasn't particularly happy with my performance, I knew i could learn from it and i could take a lot from it and use it as experience with the camera set up, lighting and in my performance. I learnt a lot in terms of performing for television and film where puppeteers use a monitor to watch their performances in real time, this enables them to see if they are doing the right things in terms of positioning in the frame that includes themselves and the puppets, to make sure lip-sync is on point and the character is looking where they are supposed too. I had never used an actual external monitor before this because i had always used the front camera on my phone but it was a great learning experience with the monitor, i felt much more confident in my re-shoot to use it again
Re-shoot:
On Tuesday 19th November, 8 days after my first shoot, I went back into the studio to re-record my footage and i was much happier with what we shot. I really thought about what did not work in the last shoot. I used three point lighting which not only made the whole image look brighter but also made the puppets much more three dimensional, they looked like they had much more life and that they were real. it was my job to bring them to life in my own performance but i could not do my job properly if the characters did not look it so that was something I really wanted to change and i was very pleased that changing from two to three point lighting allowed this.
The camera was straighter than last time which gave a much nicer looking shot than it being slightly wonky. And the biggest decision i made was to get rid of the red table cloth. Watching my first clips back i realised that the red table cloth was very ugly and took attention away from the characters and the Marmite product so that was one of the first things i decided to change.
I had accidentally put the monitor too high up on the stand when we began shooting and it was quite uncomfortable for me to perform as looking at it from on the ground was hurting my neck so i decided to lower it down to eye level so it was so much more comfortable. everything was great with the monitor until Justin tripped over one of the wires and the monitor fell and one of the HDMI plugs broke so we had to put in another one in which affected the quality and size of the picture I saw on the external monitor, luckily it did not affect the quality of the footage we shot or my own performance.
Overall i was very happy with what we shot and i was happy to begin my final edit.
EDITING:
The first thing i noticed when I began to review my clips in the new folders i had created was that there was a lot of background noise that was picked up by the overhead microphone that we used so i decided to place over the top of each clip a Denoise effect to cut out any additional sound that we did not want. However I then felt that if we put music over the top of the audio then we could remove the background noise. And this is what I did, I placed Larry Owens- Interlude over the top of the clips and this removed any background noise from the footage. and it also saved me from going through each clip individually and applying the Denoise effect. however we needed to turn the audio from the clips up because they were rather quiet
I arranged my clips and began editing them down to 30 seconds. In my script i had it so it cut from Blu the Monkey to another shot of the same character of him trying the marmite. However this look really off cutting to the same character so we arranged it so that Blu the monkey would be the character we started with so that when it cut to him again again it felt like a much more natural edit than before.
After we had composed and placed our clips in the right order we realised that the advert was two long. We had some clips with a length of 20 seconds, our advert had to be 30 seconds so i had to find a way to bring it down without affecting the narrative. I had managed to get the bulk of the story down to the bare minimum with the story still very much in tact.
However the longest part of the ad was the punchline where Blu The Monkey attacks the jar of Marmite and I felt if we tried to cut it down it may ruin the joke and ultimately ruin the advert, However if we did not cut it down our Ad would have been way too long so we had to change something. So we decided to combine two comedic elements of the sketch along with the famous love it or hate it tagline of Marmite to create the punchline. Below is the Original scene i wanted to use to end the ad
Ned our human character is meant to faint because of how much he loves the Marmite and then it is meant to cut to a test card with some static. After this Blu the Monkey is meant to go on a rant and then storm off, only to sneak up on the Marmite and attack, However this was way to long so after
Ned faints we see a test card with some static but instead of cutting to Blu we cut to a black screen with the Marmite logo, here we see the line "You'll Love It. Then we cut to Blu The Monkey who is then going to attack the Marmite and as he makes contact with the Marmite we see another black screen with the line 'Maybe You Won't' appears. Doing this brought down the time to exactly 30 seconds.
HERE IS MY FINISHED AD: MARMITE
Print AD:
For my print ad i knew i wanted to keep in tradition with older Marmite print ads which had the colours of yellow and black and as I wanted to play off the famous love it or hate it, I thought they would work well.
I decided to make A double page spread ad, A pop up ad and a billboard. I had decided to use the same design for each of them .
The first one i made was the Double page spread.
I decided on Bold 3D writing for the top of the advert and i had the colour yellow as the background on the left hand page and on the right hand side it would be black. The writing on the left was the words LOVE IT and on the left was HATE IT in bold three dimensional lettering. The effects i put on to the words were bevel and emboss and Drop Shadow
I had taken some photos at of my characters who i wanted to be in the ad. and because there was stuff in the background i used the magic eraser tool to leave only the characters that will go in the final ad. I then placed the characters into the ad facing each other and below them i would have CHOOSE YOUR SIDE written in black and yellow.
The only difference between the pop up ad and the DPS is the size of the ads. The Double page spread is around 300 pixels whereas the pop up ad is only 72 pixels. This means it is big enough to fit onto a web page if it was a real ad.
Because billboards are absolutely massive, we would not be able to make one on premier pro and upload it so what i decided to do to was get an image of a billboard and crop my advert onto the billboard. This why we can get the shape and sizing of an actual Billboard for my advert.
