Planning
Before i could begin filming my ad, I had to make sure my pre-production was complete. That included doing:
TREATMENT:
Location Recce
Script:
I completed my storyboards to make sure the camera crew as well as myself knew what shot types and camera angles where to be in each individual shot. And despite my terrible drawings, the storyboard would be used during my shoot to assist the camera crew.
Before we could film anything, a risk assessment needed to be completed to make sure that we knew what precautions we needed to take to prevent injuries to cast and crew.
Risk Assessment:
- A Treatment
- A location Recce
- A script
- A Storyboard
- And a risk assessment
TREATMENT:
·
Title - Marmite: Civil War
·
Genre - Advert with a sub-genre of comedy
·
Target Audience- Males between 13-19, From the UK
(mainly England),with a household Income- $50,000-$74,000.
·
Outline: we open on with a shot of a table with a
squeezy jar of Marmite and we see two separate shots of two characters walking
up to the table. Then we get the two characters trying marmite for the first
time. One character loves it so much he faints, Whereas the other despises it.
As he goes to leave he charges back and starts to beat the marmite.
·
Characters:
Ned- A balding Yorkshire man, aged 53, White male who works
at the local antiques store so his knowledge on modern technology is bit
behind. He lives at home with his wife Wendy however they have no children and
sleep in separate beds.
Blu The Monkey- an American blue monkey from somewhere in the
states (he never told us exactly where) in his late 30’s, even though he told
us he is 24. He is a barman in a fictional hotel with his best mate Otis, who
he also shares a flat with along with his other best mate Reggie the dog. He is big New York Giants Fan, He is
currently single, but looking.
Visual elements
·
Lighting- three-point lighting
·
Camera angles- Eye Level Angle and a medium close up shot type
·
Setting- Sound stage, Green screen in the background
·
Props- Jar of Marmite.
Audio:
·
Dialogue- spoken by the character in the scenes
·
Narration at the start and at the end of the ad.
Saying the lines- “We Invited a Man and
a Monkey who had nether tried Marmite to come and do a taste test. These were
the results”. And But don’t Destroy it, we think that’s a bit dramatic
·
Music- Larry Owens- Interlude (plays at the end of the
ad, when Blu is destroying the marmite and when the logo appears
·
Rationale- I have chosen this idea because I like
funny ads and near enough all Marmite ads are comedic in some way. I will also be using my skill of puppetry to
make this ad. I have been doing puppetry since I was 9 and have wanted to do it
professionally since I was 11. I have spoken to many professionals in this time
such as Tau Bennet, John Kennedy and Noel MacNeal to help enhance my skills. I
will be using two of my own characters Ned and Blu the monkey to create this
ad. From my research I identified that
my target audience prefer funny ads, so I will be doing this to appeal to them
·
Primary and Secondary Research: I conducted a survey on
my target audience and what they want in an advert. I also conducted secondary
research on Marmite adverts of the past and what style of adverts they have
previously done in the past as well as researched Muppet adverts from the 50’s
and 60’s which have influenced my advert. All culminating in a project that will
appeal to them, keep in tone with older Marmite adverts and to pay homage to
the 50's/60's Muppet adverts.
·
Requirements and Resources:
Cast and Crew:
Cast- Conor Blake: Blu The Monkey and Ned
Crew- Dan Alvarez, Jade Shafto,Tristan Jack(RE-SHOOT)
·
Constraints and Contingency- As I have two crew
members, they may not be able to film on the select days we are shooting. To combat
this, I will have to ask more people to help just in case there are any absent
on the day of filming.
·
Legal and Ethical Considerations: Because I am using
my own characters who have no likeness and are completely original. Plus, I am
not falsely promoting Marmite. I have no
ethical or legal considerations

Scene 1
Int Day - Studio
We open on what looks like a production shoot with a table and a green screen, as the camera rolls we cut between two separate shots of two characters walking up to the table. As this happens we see the phrase
Narrator
“We Invited a Man and a Monkey who had nether tried Marmite to come and do a taste test. These were the results”.
Ned walks into frame
Ned
Hello
Blu Walks into frame
Blu The Monkey
What We Got Here?
Looks to read the Marmite
Marm-Ite?
Turns and Faces the camera
Sounds Likes a fungal infection
We now Get shots of the characters trying Marmite for the first time
Ned
OH MY-
Inaudible noise
Ned is now frozen as he is so happy
Blu The Monkey
Blu is silent for a few seconds while he is gathering his opinion
Oh, what is this, oh my god that’s disgusting, what the hell
Ned
Still in the same position as we last saw him, falls backwards on to the floor, we hear a thud and see the BBC title card.
Blu The Monkey
Thanks guys for wasting my time.
As he begins to walk away
You know what, this is the last time you inflict your awfulness on the world
Off screen, we hear a shouting as Blu runs back in shouting
Blu the monkey
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Blu with a hammer or bat strikes the jar of Marmite. He Continues to do this as Interlude- Bob Ross theme plays along with the Marmite logo fades in along with the tagline “Some Love It, Some Hate It”
Narrator
But don’t Destroy it, we think it’s a bit dramatic
